Minimum wall thickness for 3D printing — and how to measure yours

Fundamentals 7 min read · November 1, 2026

A wall that looks fine on screen can vanish in the slicer, print as a single wobbly line, or snap when you remove supports. Here are safe minimums for FDM, resin and SLS, why thin walls disappear, and how to find the thinnest part of your model before you print.

Short version: on a 0.4 mm nozzle, plan for at least 0.8 mm (and 1.2 mm or more for anything that takes load). On resin, about 0.5–1 mm. For SLS/MJF services, about 0.7–1 mm. Then measure your model instead of guessing.

Safe minimums by technology

ProcessMinimum that printsRecommended
FDM, 0.4 mm nozzle≈0.8 mm (2 lines)1.2–1.6 mm (3–4 lines)
FDM, 0.2 mm nozzle≈0.4 mm0.6–0.8 mm
FDM, 0.6 mm nozzle≈1.2 mm1.8 mm+
Resin (SLA/MSLA/DLP)≈0.3–0.5 mm (supported)0.8–1 mm; 1.5–2 mm for hollowed shells
SLS / MJF (nylon)≈0.7 mm1 mm+, more for unsupported walls

These are starting points that most printer makers and print services agree on to within about half a millimetre. Always check your service’s own design rules for paid prints.

Why thin walls disappear in FDM

Slicers build a wall out of extrusion lines about as wide as the nozzle. A 0.5 mm wall on a 0.4 mm nozzle is too thin for two lines and awkward for one, so depending on the slicer and settings it may be printed as one thin line, partly filled, or dropped entirely — the “missing walls” you see in the preview. Modern slicers (Arachne wall generator in PrusaSlicer and Cura, the default in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer) handle varying widths much better, but they can’t print a wall thinner than about one line width.

Thin walls that do print are also weak: a single line has almost no layer bonding area, so it cracks easily.

How to measure your model’s thinnest wall

  1. Open the model in MeshAnalyzer. STL, 3MF, OBJ or STEP; it runs locally.
  2. Make sure the size is right. Thickness in millimetres only means something at the real scale — check the size readout and fix it first if needed.
  3. Read Wall thickness in the analysis. It is measured by casting rays through the solid model, not guessed from the bounding box, and reports both the thin end and the thinnest point in millimetres, with a warning when it is below what a 0.4 mm nozzle can print.
  4. Check the FDM / SLA / SLS readiness scores — they factor in the thin walls for each technology.
Tip: wall thickness needs a closed mesh to measure inside from outside. If the analysis shows open edges, run ✨ Auto-Repair first.

How to fix walls that are too thin

  • Scale the model up. A miniature printed at 120% often crosses the line from fragile to fine.
  • Switch nozzle or process. A 0.2 mm nozzle or a resin printer prints details a 0.4 mm nozzle can’t.
  • Thicken in CAD if you have the source: a shell or offset command fixes it properly.
  • Adjust the slicer: make sure the Arachne / variable-width walls option is on, and use “detect thin walls” where available.
  • Hollowing for resin: leave at least 1.5–2 mm of shell so large prints don’t crack or leak.

FAQ

What is the minimum wall thickness for a 0.4 mm nozzle?

About 0.8 mm, which is two extrusion lines. For parts that need strength, 1.2–1.6 mm is safer.

What is the minimum wall thickness for resin printing?

Supported walls can print down to roughly 0.3–0.5 mm, but 0.8–1 mm is more reliable, and hollowed shells should be 1.5–2 mm thick.

Why are thin walls missing in my slicer preview?

A wall thinner than about one or two nozzle widths cannot be built from extrusion lines, so the slicer prints it partly or not at all. Thicken or scale the model, or use a smaller nozzle.

How do I check the wall thickness of an STL?

Open it in MeshAnalyzer. It measures wall thickness by casting rays through the solid and reports the thinnest point in millimetres, free and in your browser.

What wall thickness do print services require?

For SLS or MJF nylon, about 0.7–1 mm is the usual minimum, more for unsupported walls. Check the service’s own design guidelines before ordering.
